How many times have you left home wondering if you left the garage door open? Wouldn’t it be nice to never have to worry about that again? If you have a Smartphone, there is an easy way to accomplish that and following is what and how to do it:
There’s an app for that!!
For as little as $30.00, you can purchase a Smart Garage Door Kit that will take the worry and guessing out of your “open garage door” panic. Take a trip to your local hardware store (i.e. Home Depot™ or Lowes™) or search online at Google™ or Amazon™ to pick up a Wi-Fi Remote-Controlled Garage Door Opener that you can easily install and control with your phone app.
What exactly does it do?
Not only are these devices inexpensive, they will allow you to control your garage door from afar and can be set to notify you via text when your garage door has been open or closed, or alert you if you leave home without shutting it. Best of all, if you want to let somebody inside your garage (like an exterminator, delivery man or repair man) you can do it from long distance instead of having to wait at home for them to show up!
How does it work?
These relatively new devices are fairly small and simple to install, and they work by attaching the Wi-Fi controller and its few wires to your existing garage door opener be it a Chamberlain™ or Genie™, the two most popular US garage door opener companies. Just like your current garage door opener, the Wi-Fi controller has two thin wires that attach to two small electro-magnets placed side-by-side that tell the controller whether the garage door is open or not.
Specifically, one magnet is placed on top of the garage door opening above the door and the other attaches to the top of the garage door itself. When the garage door is opened, the two magnets separate, indicating to the controller that the door is opening, and a text is then sent to you via an app on your phone. The controller does the same thing in reverse when you close the door, so no more wondering if the door is or has been shut!
All you need to know to get one.
To get one that works for your particular garage door unit, note the name and model number on the carriage and purchase a kit that claims to work with that particular model and type and then install away!
Believe me, you will be glad you did!
